Hawaii Photography: Focus on Family

In time of pandemic, our usual life rhythm has changed. We’re forced to find different sources of energy, rethink our priorities, and reschedule our plans. While waiting for the Hawaiian resorts to reopen and Pacific Dream Photography’s activities to be restored, we’re turning to family for comfort, understanding, and inspiration.

Hawaii Photographer: Exploring Kahuku Beach in Oahu

Whether you come with your friends or family, Oahu provides everything you need to have a great time. From secluded beaches like Kahuku Beach to experiential resorts like Turtle Bay Resort, the island offers tranquility, beauty, and welcoming people. All you have to do is be curious and adventurous. Embrace Hawaiian culture, admire the stunning landscape, and allow yourself mindful moments around the island. Here are the top three things to do on the iconic Kahuku Beach.

Encounter turtles at Kahuku Beach

Kahuku Beach is almost always empty, populated just by fishermen and locals. This quiet place on the North Shore of the island may be the place of a unique meeting with Hawaiian green sea turtles. You can admire them and take photos, but don’t try to touch or grab them. Respect their privacy and the environment. Also, don’t leave garbage behind or make loud noises. After all, you are their guest. And if you behave, they might invite some whales for the party too.

Catch the waves

Although the beach has white sand and perfect conditions for sunbathing, it isn’t suited for swimming. But who would want to swim when Kahuku Beach provides outstanding waves for surfing and boogie boarding? Watch the surf report and forecast and choose the best time to go to the beach. If you aren’t a water sports fan, enjoy the waves near the shore and admire the amazing ocean view.

Have some quality family time

Because Kahuku Beach is so large and empty, it’s perfect for playing, running, and having fun with your family. Nobody will interrupt your games. Remember to bring enough water and food supplies because there aren’t any stores nearby. Kahuku Beach provides you fresh air and wild nature, away from the noise and pollution of a big city. Share this experience with your family and reconnect with the environment.

There are a lot of things to do in Oahu; some are in the tourist guides, some aren’t. Ask locals and resort staff for the best places on the island. As a result, you’ll discover popular landmarks and secluded places and you’ll have a real Hawaiian experience. After all, traveling is about discovering new places and cultures and experiencing unique adventures.

Family Photography | Large Group Photos

Do you have a headcount of more than seven for your next photo session? No need to fear. While getting group photos to look professional can be a challenge, with the right light, location and the burst of a shutter, Pacific Dream Photography can make it easy. So, go ahead and get the whole family together, or invite your friends because with Pacific Dream, the motto is, “the more, the merrier!” Find below some tips to take the best group photos possible.

1. Find even, soft light: While locating a spot that will both look nice and administer good light for a lot of people can be hard, it is the most important step while taking large group photos. While shooting outdoors, hard and or directional light can be unflattering and result to uneven exposure while some people are blanketed with different brightness levels of light. To avoid this, you need to find a spot that will cover everyone’s faces in the same light so that nobody has awkward spots of sun, and nobody is in dark shadows while the others are in brightness. This will lead to a more cohesive, professional looking image. That being said, many times, your best bet will be to find open shade. This will be somewhere that everyone may look their best without squinting at the sun, or being dappled with heavy light or shadow. Take a look at these examples.

  1. Tier your subjects: Take to a staircase, a slope, or grab some chairs to separate the group into tiers to help make everyone fit a little more snug. It can be strange to have a long line of people in a photo, so tighten up your frame by placing people in tiers to ensure everyone is visible. Just make sure that the tiers are relatively even so that your end result is balanced!
  2. Laugh a little! Okay, so while most group photos are aimed to be more serious, if your clients are family or friends, a great way to make everyone look a little more comfortable is to ask them to take a silly photo. Have everyone laugh or make faces at each other for a light and fun, candid look. Often times these images end up being the favorites and if you have any issues with the group looking stiff, do one more serious smiling pose after the silly ones. Following the laughs, the group tends to look more confortable and relaxed.

Age is just a number | Special Moments

The wonderful thing about photography is that it is timeless. We capture fractions of a second for you to cherish throughout your life. What’s even better is that there is no age limit on who can be photographed, no matter what the occasion. Here at Pacific Dream Photography, we have photographed as young as newborn children to great grandparents.

We believe that life should be cherished and special moments can be captured throughout one’s life through the lens of a photographer. In Laguna Beach, we have photographed a child’s first steps on the sand and first time touching the Pacific Ocean water. We’ve also had the pleasure of photographing milestone anniversaries, engagements, and Weddings here in Laguna Beach.

To make your photo session as memorable as possible, we recommend considering to bring a few things to make it extra special. It’s common to see customized shirts being made for your vacation. Especially with large groups, this adds a fun element into your photos when looking back at them later on. The second, if you’re celebrating a birthday or engagement, is to bring balloons or other props to make your session unique to you! If you’re celebrating a baby-moon and expecting, you can bring your ultrasound and baby shoes as props for a maternity shoot. Whatever you think will make your photography session more memorable, please let your photographers know! It’s our passion to document these important moments of your life.

So whether you’re celebrating your first anniversary or your 50th, the whole family is there together, or you are by yourself, we see no limits on your photography session and are here to capture memories for you.
